Coba is older than Chichen Itza, much larger than Tulum, and you can still climb the pyramid! It is only about a half hour inland from Tulum and the road also has many cenotes (natural openings in underground rivers) that you want to explore on your way back. For people curious about the Mayan calendar and its calculation that a new era is going to do start the December 21, 2012, you will be pleased to know that Coba has the stela (stone carving) in Largo Count enrollment. He said that when the count length 5200 years of Mayan calendar ends, the world will experience a "rebirth".
